Ah’m wurkin to git a lot of stuff dun, but ah jus had to wish everone a Happy Juneteenth! Even tho the (final) Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, an Congress passed, an the President signed the 13th Amendment of Constitution on December 1865.
However, the end of slavery became the policy of the guvmint of the USofA in 1864. Unfurtunately, that wud didn’t git to Texas until June 19, 1865. On June 19, 1966 wuz the furst Juneteenth celebration. As many of the bout 250,000 slaves wuz freed in Texas dun moved thru the US, Juneteenth wuz celebrated far an wide. Unfurtunately, it weren’t made an official federal holiday until 2021. An it wuz the furst new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr Day, whut started in 1983.
Ah’m so happy that the gud ol USofA not only emancipated slaves but outlawed the whole idea of slavery! Truly slavery dun be a moral stain on the history of any country, much less Merica. Tho we ain’t above a bit of hypocrisy now an agin.
Course even tho they’s a buncha folk who fought, an died, to end slavery an help Merica live up to the ideal in the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Obviously ah an most Mericans think that “all men” dun include folk of all “races” and womenfolk! But they’s a buncha folk who dun don’t seem to have got the memo. They think that they’s special cuz they’s parents dun be white an that makes them better than folk who ain’t. Sum of them folk dun think that slaves wuz “immigrants” an that slavery wuz gud fur them!
Well, as Forrest Gump’s momma usedta say, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Maybe the mini-series “Roots” shud be mandatory watchin in schools on Juneteenth so as we, as a country, don’t furget whut slavery wuz really like and how glad we shud be that that stain ain’t a part of our legal system/guvmint.
An, no, ah ain’t gonna talk bout institutionalized racism in this har talk. That’s a topic that dun deserve a whole series of talks an ah jus don’t have the time to do it right, right now.
